Completing and understanding the homework is the best way to succeed in this course!
Homework for the week will be set by 4pm every Monday, and posted on this
website. Homeworks will be collected for grading during the
discussion section every week starting from second week.
Graded homeworks should get
returned in the grade return boxes outside Fenton 105 starting from third
week.
Please talk to John Carter if there are any problems with this process or if you have any questions about your grades on homeworks.
Lectures
Monday, Wednesday, 4:00-5:20
240C MacKenzie.
In the lectures, the new material for the week will be covered. It is very important that you come to lectures and keep up to date with understanding the new material. Aim to spend time every day on this course rather than leaving
it all to the last minute.
I strongly encourage you to use office hours to sort out things that you do not understand from class or from homeworks.
Discussion Section
Monday 6:00-6:50, Monday 7:00-7:50, Wednesday 6:00-6:50 or Wednesday 7:00-7:50
105 Fenton.
Some time will be available in the discussion section
each week to go over problems from the previous week's homework, but you
should aim to have as much as possible of the homework completed and ready to turn in before
you attend the class. The rest of the time in the discussion section will be spend working on problems in groups.
You only learn mathematics by doing it!
There will be NO QUIZZES in discussion sections this term.
Martin Luther King jr Day
There will be no class or discussion section on Monday January 17.
I have also decided to cancel the discussion sections on Wednesday January 19. Consequently, everyone's homework that week will be due in Wednesday's class rather than in discussion sections.
Exams
Final - Tuesday March 15, 3:15-5:15.
Midterms - Monday January 31, Wednesday February 23,
during the last hour of the regular lecture time.
YOU MUST BRING PHOTO ID TO ALL EXAMS!!
Prerequisites
The prerequisite for this course is
Math 241.
If you have not completed Math 241
with a grade of C- or better, your chances
of success are practically nil.
Textbooks
Applied Calculus, 3rd edition, by
Waner and Costenoble. This term we should cover most of
sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 7.2, 7.3, 7.6, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4.
Linear Systems, sections 1.1,1.5,2.1 and 2.2. This is
a course packet available from the University of Oregon bookstore. We will definitely not need this until the eighth week of class, and in fact I might decide that we do not need it at all --
so I recommend you wait until then before purchasing this packet.
Graphing Calculator
TI-83+ or TI-83 is recommended, and will be essential when we cover
the linear systems course packet.
Grades
Your course grade will be determined according to the following weights.
Homework 30% (only 6 best homeworks will be
counted), midterms 40% (20% each), final
30%. The curve will vary from test to test and
will depend on the average performance of the
students. The curve for each test will be announced after that test. The
curve for the homeworks will be standard: A: 90%, B: 80%, etc.
Make-ups for quizzes and exams will not be given
and the late homeworks will not be accepted. If you missed
one
test and have a serious documented
excuse, your grade will be determined on the basis of information that is
available.
If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what happened in
that class.
Incompletes are only awarded in the Mathematics Department when two
criteria have been satisfied: first, a student must have
a passing grade at the time the "I" is assigned; secondly, some work could
not be completed due to extenuating circumstances
(illness, auto accident, etc.). Under no circumstances will
an "I" be awarded as a substitute for a "W", "D" or
"F/N". If you find yourself in trouble, drop the course!
