Title: What's the fuss over random matrix theory?

Abstract: I will give an overview of the history and development of random matrix theory (RTM).
We will discuss where random matrices come from, what sorts of phenomena they are used to model,
and where the matrices have gone - many recent results under the purview of RTM do not involve
matrices at al. The talk should be accessible to anyone who knows what an eigenvalue is, though
a little knowledge of probability could not hurt.
