Title: Negatively curved manifolds with no smooth spines

Abstract: I will explain how to construct a complete negatively curved manifold that deformation retracts onto a compact boundaryless PL submanifold but not onto a compact boundaryless smooth submanifold. The proof involves Ontaneda's version of strict hyperbolization, and characteristic classes of PL thickenings.
