2007.04.04 1355 went to lundagåd conditori for a little something after lunch and was dismayed to find them still selling semlor (it's well after lent) and yet still not selling sockerbullar. i tried their kardamumma bullar and a saffronssnäcka and found both to be crap: their wheat dough has the textural signature of dough conditioners, no cardamom and no butter. and they put crushed peanuts on top. the saffron roll tasted like grocery-store bakery wares and is also out of season (saffron is a christmas spice). they used to have the best baked goods in town- now they have sadly slipped to the bottom ranks of Lund's conditoris.

2007.04.04 routinely in the lab for 8 hours or so starting sometime after 5pm- i left here at 2 this morning and i'm back for more at 10. recently found good hippie indian food here and have been eating almost every day- it's a good contrast to the otherwise constant diet of müsli, marabou chocolate bars, various kebabs and lots of coffee. i have collected tens of thousands of images of wiggling DNA molecules, but what now? i think i'm just going to turn them all into a giant flipbook and submit that instead of a dissertation.

2007.03.19 1019 back at work! i went up to falkenberg on sunday to visit hans and deliver his beautiful phil wood hub. i can't remember the complicated series of parts-exchanges that are planned, but somehow it involves a porteur, a singlespeed mountainbike, a ritchey breakaway and winter fixedgear. pics are on flickr, but i didnt take any photos of the couple hours we spent in a desolate bar watching the last stage of Paris-Nice and the time trial of tirreno adriatico projected onto a wall. swedish eurosport commentary at high volume annoyed the sunday drinkers but it was a great way to get out of the blustery weather and always fun to watch some bike racing.

2007.03.17 2102 i'm closer to taking data at work but expect steady lab time all next week. today, however, i posted some new flickr pics including:

* my second attempt at baking drömmar
* the corvids of Skåne
* an old titanium bike on display at cykel city

2007.03.15 954 i have exactly 4 weeks left here and piles of work to do, so what little posting i'll do will be done largely for decompression purposes. recent fun that doesnt take any time: birding on the way to work. more details when i can get some pictures. until then, here's a picture of one of the two young owls living in Lundagård behind the cathedral. there have been articles about it in local papers, so there's always a crowd looking up into the trees for the two little balls of feathers. here's a better picture from the skåne ornithological association.

2007.03.11 1856 quite the Skåne saturday:
* small breakfast of my favorite müsli
* jujitsu with a full hour of sparring with maybe 10 minutes of resting
* inflated my bike tire
* bike tire exploded
* on the way to the train station i stopped at the green kebab wagon that fills the downwind side of martenstorget with the smell of savory mystery meat. i often hear bad music coming from the order window and this time it was extra special: westlife covering the Air Supply hit ballad 'I'm All Out of Love'. i had a hard time keeping a straight face as i ordered.
* i took the train to Malmö for my Espresso Tour. pretty great coffee and i took some pictures.
* while the women and children of Knutan watched the finals of Melodiefestivalen, the men went to a local pub and had a meter of beer. [all the tabloids today say that The Ark won and will be sweden's entry in the Eurovision song contest]

2007.03.08 2103 i have a confession to make: i recently followed tsal's lead and added google analytics' statistics scripts to this page. so now i can see graphs of all the visits to this page: where you visit from geographically, how you got here (i.e. from google, my flickr account, directly typing in the address, whatever), time of day, if you've been here before, etc.

this kind of thing (and more) is ubiquitous on commercial websites and not uncommon on personal websites, it's just that no one tells you about it. i added it for the sake of my own curiosity- i like watching the number of views on my flickr account slowly creep up and so now i can track that (and more) information here. also good for my productivity, i'm sure.

2007.03.06 1344 tsal put up a clip from the Copenhagen 6-day race from me on YouTube... check it out.

2007.03.XX XXXX still more flickr pics. what i dont have pictures of: last night's birthday party for m (upstairs neighbor) which featured a traditional swedish meal of pea soup, rolls with butter and cheese and warm punsch.

2007.02.23 0933 more flickr pics.

2007.02.19 1117 i started up a flickr account about a year ago and never posted much, but now there is a new photoset!

2007.02.18 2239 eo's home safe and provides sweden pictures better and faster .

the Tour of California is on! cyclingnews.com's text coverage seems to be providing more information than the (glitch-heavy?) OfficialMegaFlashSite.

what's lame? my favorite domestic team, Kodak-SierraNevada has been excluded from the race, even though their team is stacked with talent. ok, so it's largely 'cross talent, but their sponsors are from from california and they had a good season last year. anyway, it's great to have the cycling season started again!

2007.02.06 1017 eo's here and we're having a great time. doing what?

* sunday: 6-day track race in CPH
* monday: malmö to the konsthallen for the sarah sze exhibit and to the cafe there for lunch. very good food- emphasis on local and traditional skåne ingredients with innovative combinations. we had the second and third items on the menu from monday 5/2... i've tried to translate the names and put up some pictures here.

2007.01.28 1235 just read a great article on food by michael pollan. it's the kind of information and opinion that's not hard to come by in Eugene or Berkeley, but is anathema to the broader industrial food culture that we live in. although this attitude isn't new ( MFK Fisher was saying similar things as America was undergoing its transition to nutritionism during the post-WWII period), i hope it represents an increasing awareness of the dire state of american food culture and how it affects our health. the article is a bit rambly and if you don't have time to read the whole thing, check out page 1 and then the last two pages. one piece of pollan's great advice: "Don't eat anything your great-great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food."

2007.01.25 0801 trying to put up some more pictures. also, here's the pro field for the Copenhagen 6-day race- basically all the badasses from this year's 6-day circuit will be there- starts in a week.

2007.01.22 1008 finally i get what i came for: some snow! i dont have my camera with me, but the weather forecast says we might get the same thing tomorrow, so i hope i'll be able to put up some photographic proof. in other news: i take back everything negative i've ever said about city bikes. my friend gs has loaned me hers while i'm here, and man it is fun. i'd hate to ride it up a real hill, but other than that- no complaints. pictures soon.

2007.01.19 1720 remember how tiny my hut in eugene is? here's a picture of the kitchen/livingroom/diningroom with the addition of the enormous turtle tank.

in portland, we (whole famn damily + so's) went to simpatica's dining hall for brunch. it runs from 10-2, is very popular and they dont take reservations for parties less than 8. we got there around 1230 and we heard we'd have a 35 minute wait. fine. here's how it went.

when i got to Lund, i stay for a couple nights with jb and nb- i'll be moving back into their basement on monday for the rest of my time here. first pictures back in Lund.

2007.01.17 945 god morgon- jag är tillbaka i sverige! it has taken me a while to get over the jet lag, but i'm finally back on a normal schedule. i have some pictures from portland to put up, including various food escapades, but i haven't quite got them together yet. it's amazing how similar things are here to when i left 10 months ago- i dont know what i was expecting, but in many ways it's like i never left. one thing that is different: there are nice new lab facilities here and today we're having an inauguration for the new building, featuring free lunch, hooray! i hope to get around to posting some pictures sometime this week, so check back soon.
