a summary of bike rides, including mileage estimates

2006 odometer: 20xx

2006.07.08 830-1300 w/ eb, pc, ss. car to lorane (good idea!) and then 26 miles down the siuslaw river road, which meant some decent climbing. it was a great ride, nice high pace going out and good work on the legs.
about 55 miles (including going to ss's place and back)
average about 15mph.

2006.07.02 900-1400 w/ kh. (ll, st, no shows!) poodle creek route to highway 36 and then turn around. straight on crow road to the bike path. legs felt good, lungs/stamina also fine. we kept a pace of 16 or so for most of the way out . kh hit the wall just before the last little hill on crow road but we finished up alright. Chamois Butt'r (tm) and the rolling-hill route seemed to keep everything in order on my seat, so that's good. overall a very good weekend: 2 solid days at 75% and 80% of the real STP mileage, both days feeling great the whole time and nice post-ride recovery.
72 miles
average 14-15

2006.07.01 830-1500? w/ kh, pc, ss. out SE of town, past BRING recycling, onto sears road (parallel to I5 on east side) down to the Row River Trail, a paved-over railroad grade that's open to pedestrians, bikes and horses only. it was a great ride- shady, no wind, beautiful scenery (along the Row River and Dorena Reservoir) and a solid pace. we rode to the end of the trail and turned back and came through goshen to get to franklin (crap route). kh and i rode to the end of the bike path when we got back in town. information no one needs to know: saddle sores on my right butt cheek... i bought some chamois Butt'r (tm) at REI...
94 miles
average 17 until we got back towards town.

2006.06.17 10am till 435 w/ kh to poodle creek, up to junction city, out on some backroads until we hit the appropriate mileage. back to my house at almost exactly....
90 miles
16.something

2006.06.16 after work w/ kh out bike path, up to alvadore and then back. one good tailwind sprint on clearlake.
36 miles
average: ?

2006.06.10 10 - 1430 w/ kh on the poodle creek metric century route from last year except we took clear lake over to pine grove (or whatever) and back on the bike path. slight lower back pain since last night but on the ride it seemed ok.
distance: 62 miles
pace: 16-17?

2006.06.04 1000 - 1520 siuslaw falls via lorane and back via bailey hill. a rough ride at times- highly variable weather and pace. with kh, ll, st, eb. good ride. some knee discomfort- felt mostly like muscly/wear not injury. i'll be off the bike all week, so it should be fine.
distace: 63 miles
pace: 15ish avg?

2006.06.03 930 for 4.5 hours rode w/ kh, ll, eb and 2 others out mackenzie view and hill road. kh and i then did camp creek, walterville lane and back via camp creek and mackenzie view.
distance: 69 miles
pace: i dunno... 16?

2006.05.31 evening quick ride w/ kh out to the end of the river path.
distance: 22miles
pace: slow.

2006.05.29 10-? (4.5 hours in saddle) mackenzie view and hill road out to the store, then back via marcola highway (and old marcola road) to hill road where we went right and back on mackenzie view to coburg road. rode out through coburg and a ways down some roads out north of there before heading back into town. from the university we went back out to do the bike path for some extra miles.
distance: 72 miles
pace: 15.8 average

2006.05.28 1100-? w/ kh rode bike path to corner, out through alvadore to highpass road and junction city. back to school, around river path to homedepot area and then back via coburg road... i think. kh flatted on the way back in. some absolutely shitty weather- heavy rain at times, constant swirling wind.
distance: 64
pace: ? kept less than 18.

2006.05.24 evening rode camp creek with kh. probably added some crap to get the mileage up
distance: 40 miles?
pace: ?

2006.05.21 900-1530 did wolf creek with a huge pack of folks (everyone here i've ever ridden with?) i guess there were 9 of us and with wildly different paces. we went out via lorane, siuslaw river road and back via crow and the bike path. wolf creek is pretty intense- lots of climbing and short ups and downs even before you get to the real ascent. the weather was windy and rainy for a while at the beginning but cleared up for the actual approach and climb a little bit after we got out of lorane. as for the hills, my legs weren't able to give my lungs any trouble and i was routinely crushed by g, eb and kh (riding fixed). then in the flats on crow, our 21mph-ish paceline got blasted by paul who came from the back to kick it up to 26 and i couldnt hang. other than that, i did fine and had a great time. wonderful views of clearcuts.
distance: 75 miles
pace: 15mph average

2006.05.20 1000-1300 did mackenzie view with kh. felt pretty good considering i had only eaten a couple times since tuesday. burger, fries and milkshake afterwards.
distance: 42 miles
pace: slowish

2006.05.17 1730 - 1930 was real sick on tuesday night and barely made it to ride with kh from school, around the bike path and then over to altonbaker park and back.
distance: 14 miles
pace: 12?

2006.05.13 1600ish + 2.75 hours from b+h down to where E and W amazon meet, up along 46th to willamette and up over spencer's butte to fox hollow. r up foxhollow to get to the top, back down to amazonian confluences via foxhollow. then up fox hollow to the top and back via willamette. then some riding around in town to get up to about:
40 miles
pace: 14.3
max: 44.0
2400 ft of climbing

2006.05.09 1745-2000 from b+h out fox hollow, lorane, bailey hill. nice climbs, lung conditioning needs the work.
distance: 28 miles
pace: ?

2006.05.03 1830-2030 from b+h's place out lorane highway (10+ for most), out to spencer creek, pine grove, crow, right on oak hill, up green hill (a real crusher- i was suffering in my lowest gear doing 3 mph or something by the top), down (nearly hit a deer that jumped out in front of me while i was going 30+), back in on 18th.
distance: 25+ (forgot to reset until past top of lorane highway)
pace: 16 average excluding ride up over lorane highway

2006.05.01 -? riding to school from b+h's place is about 3.75 miles each way, so 15 miles every 2 days. gentle slope at the end on the way back and usually a headwind in the morning.

2006.04.30 1230-1430 w/ ap out over lorane, spencer creek, pine grove, crow, bike path.
distance: 28ish
pace: 14?

2006.04.23 1000-1400 w/ ll, st, eb, kh, g? out lorane highway, R on territorial, R on crow to bikepath and back to town.
distance: 43 miles
pace: 14 mph average, included some hills. good paces set by g? and kh.

2006.04.22 1000-1300 w/ ll, ss, pc. out weird springfield route to intersection of marcola w/ old mohawk and camp creek roads. R on camp creek out to intersection w/ 126 and traced similar route back through springfield.
distance: 35 miles
pace: varied. included long stretches w/ pc at 20ish.

2006.04.19 w/ kh. out to coburg via gateway, back via neighborhood route and river path.
distance: 26 miles
pace: 16mph average

2006.04.16

2006.04.01 800-1030 out the long way to mckenzie view, left on hill road and headed back on marcola road. nice ride, kept up a decent pace.
distance: 38 miles
pace: 15.5 mph

2006.03.26 10-1215 out on the whole GEARs ride that i should have done saturday. went with l+s, p+s. nice paceline once we got out to mackenzie view drive. paul and i went out to the mohawk store and back, most of that with paul pulling at 18-20 until we got back into town. i couldnt hold the 20mph pace towards the end of the ride for more than a few miles, even with paul pulling
distance: 39 miles
pace: 15 average

2006.03.24 10-11ish tried a GEARs ride in the rain. out bike path along I-5, past gateway and around to coburg road where i turned back because my feet were freezing cold.
distance: 16 miles
pace: lots of stopping and starting at the beginning. i held about 19 all the way back (slight tailwind)

2006.03.23 12-13 and 1630-1730 rode a bit on the fixed at lunch with kh- over the river and around on the trails. (about 10 miles) and then after work went out the bikepath by I5, over through gateway area, across crescent and down past the delta ponds back through town.
distance: 26 miles total
pace: about 17 after work.

2006.03.19 1730-1845? phg and i ran out to the bike path wetlands to look for frogs. we saw an owl or 2. a good time was had by all.
distance: 10miles?
pace: uhh... very slow

2006.03.18 10-1300? to junction city via river road and such, back through alvadore and the bike path. a GEARS ride that saw a chunk of folks (not me) start off at a quicker pace and then the trailing group follow (me, l+s, s+p, e and a couple others). we never came close to catching the lead group but had a nice ride ourselves including a real fun break with p pulling s and me for a few miles at about 25 mph. i couldnt hold it the whole time and they dropped me right before that little hill before the bike path. we all regrouped on the bike path and rolled into town together. i learned that it is very hard (impossible?) for me to watch people pull away and not try to keep contact.
distance: 42 miles
average: 15-16mph (including cooldown on the way in and warmup on the way out

2006.03.13 1030-1130 from chelan house. out north on 97-A, left at the airport and out until hill drops down into 90 degree turn east. good spinning, 2 decent slopes and some nice quick descents. also very clear increase in speed as i warmed up (at least 20 minutes). beautiful day, a little cold. some numbness in toes still but i suspect that may be cold-related.
distance: 16 miles
average: 16 mph

2006.03.11 830-1250 met tsal at UW and rode with him over to ballard, across the locks and then down interbay to piers downtown and back to ballard. he took off then after 19 miles and i rode along the burke-gillman (plus the 'fast cyclist' cutoff up to lakecity way) up to bothel and then a roundabout route back to the hotel i was staying at with my parents. overall it felt good to really spin for a longer distance. still some numbness in the toes from the shoes... partially because it was cold, i think. small seat tilt adjustment made saddle much more comfortable and something also got rid of the post-ride tingly hands that i had on the last ride on the raleigh.
distance: 40 miles
average: 13 or so with tim on the busy bikepath, 16-17 afterwards

2006.03.07 1150-1300 from school on the fixed. down the river path, across the railroad tracks on riverroad and then out the bike path to the corner. back directly. 90 rpm corresponds to about 19mph, which means stronger legs will be needed to make 'spinning' a possibility.
distance: 19 miles
average: 15-16 going out, 18-19 coming back

2006.03.05 1045-1215 rode out to coburg via suburbs and back via a busy coburg road. first ride with clip-in pedals went well- some pressure in the shoes, may have been too tight. whole ride at about 90rpm and about 15-16mph. i need to keep this style of riding (no hills, mellow pace) for the whole month of march and get up to about 60-70 miles per week like this, adding about 10% per week.
distance: 23 miles
average: 13 mph average

2005 total miles = 530

2005.09.25 1000-1430 did the blackberry bRamble 100km route but started from LL+ST's place and went straight home off the bike path. persistant pain while riding after the first 40 miles = very bad for 2 reasons:
1. it wasnt completely healed
2. i damaged it again and so the 1 week between now and the Peach Century cant really be expected to heal it even as well as it was for this last ride
right now my plan is to do the stupid thing: lay off riding for the week and then do the century anyway. i may drop into the health center this week and find out just how stupid this idea is- i dont relish the idea of having knee surgery.
63miles

2005.09.24 pm rode out to fir butte and Royal corner. siuslaw falls ride earned me some knee damage, most likely through the repeated violation of the DontIncreaseMileageMoreThen10percentperWeek rule. was off the bike mostly for the intervening days... pain only while cycling was a bad sign, but this ride felt ok for most of the time.
14 miles

2005.09.18 1100-1500 out fox hollow (good long hill), through lorane and down to Siuslaw Falls. thanks to st's new cycloputer, mileage and speeds were noted at various points. our average in the flats was probably around 16 and we tried working on some paceline stuff. ll is a sissy about following close, so she never gets the full benefit of the draft... however, both ll and st have been training a lot more often than me. came back all the way on lorane highway, including the suicide downhill potholefest coming back into town- never again will i ride that stretch.
65 miles

2005.09.12 1836-1958 out to top of bailey hill, back down this side and then over gimpl hill, across the highway to The Corner and then back via the bikepath. average looks like about 16 which is good but upping the pace isnt a substitute for a long ride. the 2-hill ride was no problem.
22 miles

2005.09.11 1830-1930 out lorane highway to mcbeth road and back. lame-o ride... getting dark sooner means rides really need to leave in the fiveoclock hour.
12 miles

2005.09.08 1900-2030 out Gimpl hill road, across 126, up to The Corner, quick trip to Fir Butte road intersection and then back along bikepath. from door to door in 1.5 hours means an average of 15mph
22 miles
note: this means my first ride was probably more like 25 miles...

2005.09.07 915-1020? out fern ridge bike path to The Corner and then out to firbutte road and back.
8 miles?

2005.09.04 1100-1500? rode out lorane highway past lorane and to the letz creek road on the siuslaw river road. legs were a bit uncooperative from the start. i happened to catch up with ll and st as they were turning onto territorial from lorane highway. wanted to go fishing on the siuslaw but found a tiny stream instead. it's a good thing i didnt go further down because i was completely destroyed on the way back: my legs were out of it by the time i got over the little rise after fox hollow road meets lorane highway and even in the flats and rolling hills afterwards i was starting to really lag. as i came up the hill between mcbeth and chambers, i lost all form and my helmet started to feel really heavy... shifted straight into my bottom gear to go up the little rise of chambers and then wobbled my way down the hill, very glad all the lights were green. i managed to take a shower, drink some gatorade and eat a PB and J before passing out on the couch for about an hour.
autopsy results: could be water related, but i think i did an ok job keeping hydrated. also had 1.3 clif bars, a pear and an icecream from the lorane store... may have been a little underfed in the short term. more likely candidates: not enough good food and hydration the night before, not enough electrolytes (only one bottle was gatorade) and just not being recovered enough from the 2 consecutive days of riding.
53 miles

2005.09.03 afternoon rode the bramble route backwards out to the LongTom river which, it turns out, is a muddy stream where Franklin crosses it near alvadore. headwinds are a bit pesky out there NW of town.
31 miles

2005.09.02 800-900 quick morning ride out friendly/lorane highway and back on bailey hill. saw the corpse of a young deer absolutely crawling with maggots. warming up (especially from The Asleep State) takes a while- like longer than from my place to the top of Larane highway. evidently im supposed to work in rides like this 5 days a week and one bigger ride a week to prepare for a century.
13 miles

2005.08.28 1240-1500 out bailey hill, over briggs hill and back on territorial, lorane and fox hollow. 3 good hills and i had a grand time overall. seemed that about halfway through i started losing speed and really had to focus on riding to keep up the pace- basically due to legs getting mangled on the first two climbs. new stem height and bar wraps are improving posture and comfort. close to the limit of what i should do without additional water- 2x24oz was just enough. also, the warmup-before-monster-hillclimbing is true and very important to longer rides. i really like that just by doing one hill in any direction from eugene you end up in gorgeous countryside with that forest-fields mix that this part of the world has cornered the market on.
mileage = 35

2005.08.26 1930 out chambers and back bailey hill. chambers is a bit of work and starting out with it is a bad idea. when stand-up hills are the first item on a ride, i tend to overwork my lower back muscles- not pleasant.
12 miles.

2005.08.21 1030 out dillard to 99, south on 99 through creswell to the dorf of saginaw (car back with 'rents). dillard hill is pretty great- i managed to sit most of it in my second-lowest gear except for some of the switchbacks that i had to stand for. oh and estimated time is about 50 minutes, which means i averaged 24 mph thanks to the long descent when i must have been doing 35 or more.
mileage = 20

2005.08.17 1900 out willamette and back on fox hollow. was out of the saddle, sweating, huffing and puffing, etc. all the way up the willamette hill after the second cemetary. ride down is a high-speed snoozer.
with the help of google maps ,
mileage is 16

sunday ride with ll, st. in town, out coburg, makenzie view and back on mohawk and old mohawk highway and through springfield.
estimated mileage: 30

evening ride with ll, st. out lorane highway and back bailey hill
estimated mileage: 12

blackberry bRamble- poodle creek metric century with ll, st, e?. route is still indicated by arrows on the road- out lorane highway, crow road, noti, poodle creek, fern ridge, the corner and back into town via bike path, chambers and parks.
mileage: 62

bailey hill ride with ll. out bailey hill, back on lorane highway and down chambers, over to l+s's and then 2 times up college hill on lincoln.
esimated mileage: 15

first ride out friendly, lorane highway, spencer creek, pine grove, crow road, across w.11th and down to The Corner (with extra little hill out on royal).
mileage: 23
