Variations on the Academic Proposal

Although all academic proposals contain the same components (see the Proposal Outline), they may vary depending on their nature and emphasis. Each proposal is unique and the following examples are meant to explain the ranges of acceptable variabiity. For more information on the programmatic exit options see Options.

Practical Project:

The emphasis in a project will be on the development of an event or materials of a practical nature, for example, handbooks, websites, marketing plan and materials, etc. These project materials will be accompanied by a comparatively brief academic document containing all the parts of an academic report or proposal. However, the literature review may be briefer and an annotated bibliography may constitute the body of this information. The specifics of the academic document are dictated by the project faculty adviser.

Consequently, a proposal for this type of study would emphasize what will be done, how it will be done and why both from the practical and from the academic perspectives. It may have components of a grant proposal in addition to the segments of an academic proposal which will reappear in extended form in the academic document.

Literature Review Project:

The emphasis in this type of study is on the assembling and explicating a body of literature to support a practical or theoretical purpose. The methodology section of this study emphasizes the strategies used to select, find, evaluate and analyze the literature. The main body of the study is separated into chapters that explore subsections of the literature to be reviewed. The specifics of the academic document are dictated by the project faculty adviser.

Consequently, a proposal for a literature review study would be structured to provide as much specific information as possible regarding strategies for selection, retrieval, evaluation and analysis of the literature content areas to be studied. Justification for selection the content areas and the manner of their division into subtopics must also be stressed. A list of chapters and their content would be essential.

Capstone Literature Review:

The academic document for this study presents the same sections as the proposal is quite brief and may bee separate or the first chapter of the literature review document. The literature review document is similar to the literature review project. However, it relies upon materials related to the three classes selected for the capstone experience. It may take the simpler form of thesis, antithesis, synthesis.

Consequently the proposal for this type of study stresses the relationship of problem to be addressed to the selection of classes and materials to be reviewed.

Thesis:

Thesis studies may take many forms. However, the academic document mirrors the form of the traditional proposal and is presented in the format dictated by the graduate school. Three hours of additional credits are required of students choosing this options.

The proposal for a thesis follows the traditional format precisely and fully. The segments of this website featuring procedures for constructing a proposal are directed at this option and are meant to be adapted to project or capstone by student.
