CHART

The chart form below is designed to be used in conjuction with the proposal outline. Eventually your chart will have all the components of the outline in it. However, we will begin with the most crucial elements. What are you going to do? This should be expressed in two sentences in the brief purpose statement. How are you going to do it? This should be expressed in the Design of the Study section. The design of study includes information about the general research method you intend to use including the consequences of choosing that method. It also includes the specific methods, procedures and techniques you will use. General methods must be shaped for each particular study. This includes rationales and sequencing as well as descriptions of the procedures you will use for gathering , anayzing and reporting information.

This chart allows for a single main focus and 2 sub foci. The main focus topic is essential, the sub foci are optional. There should not be more than two and they should be continually related to the main focus. Placing your concepts and references in the boxes of a chart form such as this will assist you in attending to the focused purpose of your study and not becoming sidetracked into interesting but tangentially related collateral literature. Your literature review section should include your research procedures, with rationale for choices. You should describe these for choice of data bases, selection an use of search terms and Boolean combinatorial patterns. This should match closely your purpose and focus terms. Your chart will be used also to list resources for this section.

By the time you are ready to write your final proposal, your chart should contain entries for all components in the proposal outline. The most important sections, i.e.those that define and focus your study (Purpose, Literature Review, Design of Study) should be quite complete. The chart will probably be close to wall sized at this point. You may find it helpful to print the segments you write for the motet conference and place them in the appropriate places.

Note: If you have completed this chart while referencing the cycle and proposal outline sections of this website, you have the basis for your final proposal. Most students also copy each block of the chart on a page to put in a notebook they can carry as they work. As you work each block will grow with information until your chart will fill a large wall. Some students buy a large tackboard to put under their bed or behind a couch. Others like having the chart in plain view to stimulate thought.
