ACCELERATED REHABILITATION PROTOCOL

DAY 1-3:

Continuous passive motion (CPM) maximum of 0-110 degrees

Knee immobilizer

Weightbearing as tolerated

Knee extension exercises (prone hanging, heel pillow)

DAY 3-14:

CPM at home until 110 degrees of flexion is achieved

Weightbearing

Extension exercises with weight if full extension is not present

Active -assisted flexion

Hamstring curls

Quarter squats

Step ups

Calf raises

Straight leg raises

WEEK 2-4:

Discontinue CPM

Custom knee brace

Leg press

Stationary bike

Stairmaster

WEEKS 4-8:

ROM 0-130 degrees

Swimming

Cycling

Jumping rope

Jogging

WEEKS 8-10:

Isokinetic evaluation with 20 degree extension block (180 & 240 degrees/second)

WEEKS 10-16:

Pull ROM

Sport specific skills

Isokinetic evaluation (60-180-240 degrees/second)

 

RETURN CRITERIA:

If patient has met criteria of full ROM, no effusion, good stability, and 90% or better strength compared to uninvolved extremity with positive psychological mind set, then a return to competition may be implemented.
