Outdoor Painting and Drawing in Siena/Florence, Italy

DATES
July 31 – August 29, 2005

PROGRAM GOALS

This program offers intensive drawing/watercolor landscape painting and Italian language classes in Italy. Students will study the painting, sculpture, and architecture of Siena and Florence.

LOCATION

Siena, a medieval town, is four hours from both Rome and Milan by train. Florence, a Renaissance city, is an hour and fifteen minutes by bus from Siena. Both cities are full of artwork and monuments from the Etruscan, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, and later periods.

PROGRAM SITE

The primary site of the program is Siena where students will paint cityscapes and landscapes. Because of the portable nature of watercolor painting, class is held at various outdoor locations. In case of rain, there is an indoor classroom facility. Painting locations in Siena include Il Campo, ll Duomo, and St. Francesco, and in Florence Fort Belvedere and Piazza Michelangelo. There will be two class trips to Florence.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The primary goal of this program is to study landscape/cityscape drawing and painting and to gain a basic knowledge of Italian language. In addition to regular class meetings, an overnight trip to Venice, tours of Siena, Florence and nearby hill towns will be held. A visit to a local bookmaker and a lecture about Il Palio (horse race) will be arranged.

The number of the students in this program is limited to 16. Students will be working closely with the instructors. Students will earn 7 credits for 18 hours of painting class work per week during a 4 week class (ART401/601) and 1 credit for 4 hours of language class work per week for 4 weeks (ITAL: 199).

A two-credit introductory Italian language course offered in the spring is required.

RESIDENT DIRECTOR

Satoko Motouji, a visiting assistant professor from the University of Oregon's Department of Art will serve as resident director for the program in 2005. In addition to offering a site studio art class, the director also assists the students with housing, registration, and general administration for the program.

A staff member from the University for Foreigners in Siena will serve as an on-site Italian class instructor.
