analog / digital studio – arch 484/584 fall 00 – prof. nancy cheng
- To improve efficiency in developing architectural ideas through sketching
- To further articulation of a building design through elevation studies
Each of the final studio sessions will be used to charette towards the final review. See Procedure
After the video-conference session, most of us ended up discussing possibilities for the final review at Expresso Roma. Many good ideas came up on how to create an engaging non-traditional review. It sounded like people were interested in something like the following:
- 3 arenas for data projection presentation + one area for site information, one area for stamp project.
- Each student has an area on the wall for a large format 36" x 48" poster with an accompanying 11" x 17" three-ring binder with acetate overlays for reviewer's suggestions. The poster would be dominated with one very dramatic image at a large scale to raise people's attention. Images should be posted to the Web as PDF for outside reviewers.
There was interest in having a continuous slideshow on a monitor or projector towards the front of the room. This could have site information, student background web pages and/or images of the designs.
- Statement + diagrams (site response, program organization, form, symbolism)
- Assignment 1 Background reports
- Assignment 2/3 Site impressions
ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS OR MODEL VIEWS. Print out large to work, reduce for booklet
- Site plan (show parking, paths, gardens, roofs & canopies), 1/20" working scale
- Floor plans (show floors above and below, label rooms) 1/16" for booklet
- Sections or sectional perspectives (one complete site section at 1/16", one partial at 1/8" scale)
- Elevations, 1/8" working scale
- Optional:
Detail elevation study at =" with accompanying wall section
- Assignment 5 structural axon
- Exterior views or animation (uphill and downhill, entry sequence)
- Assignment 4 / 7: Interior views, animation or storyboard of tech space with PEOPLE
STAMPS: Print out a progression of 3 stamps arranged vertically. Choose either your Phase 1, their change and your Phase 2 or the alternate sequence (their phase1, your change, their phase 2)
MEDIA:
All students must show some evidence of use of 3D modeling. If you have satisfied this requirement, you can use your tools of choice as long as the project is legibly and professionally presented.
Since we have so much work to do, students must attend the remaining studio sessions and report for the final review by 12:30, Nov. 30.
During each class session, we’ll use sketching to refine the material you have created.
On Friday: Site plans and site sections
On Monday: Elevation variations (bring elevation shells)
On Wednesday: Layout revisions (bring initial layouts) See if you can crank out a rough draft set of these drawings as a charette by Monday and layout for Wednesday so we can work together on their refinement and plan your presentation. I would like to have a long desk crit with each student Friday 12-5, Saturday or Monday.
Let me know when you are available outside class time for crits and how I can help your design process.
