To
understand how teamwork can enrich the design process
- To develop facility in using abstraction in graphic images
From given
images, work with remote partners to develop graphics that reads well both as a
condensed “stamp” and as a large format design.
The small size of a stamp requires careful
concentration of pictorial meaning, onto a surface of approx. 0.5 to 1
square-inch. A well designed stamp has clarity through:
- clear
separation of image-parts
-
signet-like reduction of shape or their abstraction
-
simplification / reduction of color, however maintaining the color composition
-
support / complement of image by figures and type
The students can choose from given samples:
art-stamp: Kurt Schwitters or Robert Rauschenberg
landscape-stamp: Caspar David Friedrich or Hopper or Brookings landscape
architecture-stamp: Mies van der Rohe or Frank Lloyd Wright or Bernard Maybeck
- develop stamp in free-hand sketches
- transfer free-hand sketch to computer
- to achieve formal and image-quality (character), check the design in scale 20:1 on cardboard (pen, colourpen, guache or computer-printout). Special care should be taken for colour-properties.
phase 0: Thu, Nov. 2 --> start of project, every group starts working on a stamp design
phase 1: Sat, Nov. 4, 1pm --> results have to be saved on the Stuttgart exchange-server and saved for future presentation. Exchange of images
phase 2: Mon, Nov. 6, 1pm --> new results from other parties have to be saved, locked, work will be exchanged again.
phase 3 - final: Wed, Nov. 8, 8 am --> final results are presented via video-conference
Every group starts working "on their own stamps", then transfers it to other people and finally will work on it again. For every handover of Photoshop files, students also transmit text explanations for what the intentions are.
