Before joining the Oregon faculty, Professor O'Keefe was a faculty member at Purdue University and University of Arizona. At University of Arizona he was also director of the Division of Economic and Business Research. He has been a visiting faculty member at Tulane University, University of Arizona, and at Queensland University in Australia.

He has published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Accounting and Business Research, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Research in Accounting Regulation, The Journal of Accounting Literature, The Journal of Financial Economics, The Review of Economic Studies, and other journals.
