Advising Questions
Q-1. When should I see an accounting advisor?
A. There is no requirement to see an accounting advisor unless you have a specific question to ask. Accounting
advisors give advice about specific aspects of the accounting program. If you have questions about general College
or University requirements, you should see the advisors in Room 271 Gilbert Hall.

Q-2. Should I do anything before I see an advisor?
A. Yes. You should have carefully read the University catalog on the accounting program, and this documentation.
You should make a written note of the specific questions you wish to ask. If you have questions, contact Roger
Chope, 346-3308, Room 212D Gilbert.
Graduate students and transfer students should see Helen Gernon, Head
of the Accounting Department, 364 Gilbert Hall.

Questions About Admission into the Accounting Program
Q-3. I would like a major in accounting. What are the requirements for admission?
A. Admission to the College of Business satisfies the requirements for admission to the accounting program.

Q-4. How Can I "Challenge" a Course?
A. The Department does not give challenge exams nor does it offer correspondence courses. We are basically
a residential university.

Q-5. I am not Seeking a Degree, Only Accounting Courses Towards a Job or a Professional
License (CPA, CMA, CIA). May I Take Several Courses at Once?
A. Whether or not you are seeking a degree, you must still abide by stated prerequisites, including equivalency
approval from the Department Chairman for courses taken elsewhere. You may not take sequential courses concurrently.

Questions About Transfer Credit, Course Waivers, and Substitutions
Q-6. I received credit for some accounting courses at another college. Can I receive
transfer credit towards the requirements of the accounting degree at the University of Oregon?
A. Determining equivalency is complex. Typically, equivalency for ACTG 211 and ACTG 213 is granted if a
C or better was earned.
Equivalency for courses above ACTG 213 is very difficult to obtain. Your work must have been from a University
whose business program is accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, must have been
completed within the last three years, and must have earned a C or better. ACTG 350, 352, 450, as the heart of
the accounting program, will not be waived.
Courses taken overseas rarely qualify for equivalency.

Q-7. I am enrolled in the accounting program. I want to leave temporarily. Is it possible
to get equivalency towards the accounting program at the U of O by taking an accounting course at another university?
A. That depends upon the course and the university. You are least likely to receive equivalency for Intermediate
Accounting. (See answer to the question above.) In any event, see the Head of the Accounting Department before
you leave to avoid disappointment later. Also, be aware of our residency requirement: 24 upper division hours in
residence.

Questions About Taking the CPA Exam
Q-11. I want to work as a CPA. Can you give me some information about the exam and
how I should prepare for it?
A. If you plan to sit in Oregon, information about qualifications for sitting may be obtained by writing:
Oregon State Board of Accountancy, 403 Labor & Industries Bldg., Salem, OR 97310
or telephone (503) 378-4181. If you plan to sit in another state, write to the Board of Accountancy in that state.
The accounting courses at the University are much broader in scope and content than simply focusing on the CPA
exam. In addition, many CPA review courses are offered in many locations UofO accounting graduates taking the exam
consistently perform above the national averages.
BE 420 is a suggested elective course for those who want more depth in commercial law.
