OSU Considers Collective Bargaining

With the passage of Measure 8, the faculty at OSU began to explore the possibility of collective bargaining. Shortly after the first of the year, the Faculty Senate established the Faculty Taskforce on Collective Bargaining. About the same time, Rubin Landau, President of OSU's AAUP Chapter, was contacted by a number of faculty members, indicating that they were interested in "getting a union going" and asked AAUP to help initiate this process -- this interest came from a faculty tired of not having a voice, not from AAUP. Landau called National. Patrick Shaw, attorney and Associate Secretary of the National Office of AAUP, spoke at a chapter luncheon meeting on January 31, 1995. He met with the Faculty Senate Taskforce and other interested faculty in a series of meetings held during his two days in Corvallis. OSU faculty's search for an answer to their dilemma was covered in depth by local TV, radio, and newspapers. Landau said that the coverage seemed to be even-handed and faculty felt a general sense of community support. The Faculty Taskforce has completed its report and submitted it to the Faculty Senate. The Faculty Senate will consider this report at its June meeting.

Under the leadership of the chapter president, a number of faculty grievances were addressed during this academic year. Also, the Chapter is in the process of electing new officers.
