Call to Action
It is imperative that we take a proactive position in this upcoming
election. Our vital interests are at stake. We must defeat
Measures 8 [because of its immediate impact on our income and
ultimate impact on our pensions] and Measure 15 [because of its
indirect impact on funding for higher education as a result of
mandating funding levels for public schools]. We should also be
concerned about other ballot measures and about the composition of
the new Legislature. What can we do?
-
Vote! [Register if necessary.]
-
Urge our family members to vote! [Registered if necessary.]
-
Provide transportation if needed.
-
Know the issues related to the initiatives. Know where various
candidates stand on relevant issues.
-
Talk to neighbors and friends.
-
Talk with other faculty members. This helps all of us to keep
foremost in our minds the importance of this election.
-
Urge retired faculty to vote against these measures. On a long-
term basis, Measure 8 will negatively impact retired
faculty by making it more difficult to obtain cost-of-living
adjustments. Also, fairness is an issue.
-
Encourage sympathetic neighbors and friends to vote. Provide
transportation if needed.
-
Write letters-to-the-editor on issues.
-
Write/'phone candidates, expressing your views and urging them
to support AAUP positions.
-
Participate in town meetings and other public meetings in which
issues will be discussed.
