Visiting National Student Exchange Students

Important Dates to Remember

  • Application Due: April 30, 2009

The University of Oregon National Student Exchange Application is a special application to be admitted to the U of O while on exchange.  It is important to have it in on or before the deadline to ensure that your registration is arranged by your priority time.

  • Fall Registration Begins: May 18-May 28, 2009

  • UO Housing Deadlines: http://housing.uoregon.edu

If you are planning on living on campus, apply well before the housing deadline to have the best chance to receive a housing contract.

  • R.S.V.P. for NSE Orientation: September, 2009

The NSE Orientation is required for all National Student Exchange students. For more information, email us at nse@uoregon.edu.

  • NSE Orientation: September, 2009

This is a mandatory meeting for all incoming NSE Students.  The orientation is an opportunity to learn about the University of Oregon and the surrounding area.  This is the time to ensure that you understand registration and the costs of attending the University.  You will also learn about recreation and entertainment opportunities on and off campus, and have a chance to meet fellow NSE students.

Visiting Students are encouraged to visit the University's Academic Calendar.

Transferring Credits

The University of Oregon's academic year is on the quarter system.  To avoid complication, it is recommended that you exchange for a full year.  If you are exchanging onlypart of the year, it is important to know that term credits from U of O are not equal to semester credits. One (1) semester credit is equal to 1.5 quarter credits.  For example, if you take 12 credits at the U of O, you will receive 8 semester credits to transfer to your home school.  We recommend taking 15-16 credit hours per term to equate to the 30 yearly semester credits you would receive at your home school.

Special Registration Procedures

A few programs at the Uo require special arrangements prior to the NSE exchange to guarantee that the student will be able to take their courses.  Below I have listed the arrangements required:

Architecture/Interior Architecture.

Each student will need to contact the department for an application.  The student completes the application and submits it prior to being able to take courses in the department.  Students are only admitted for Fall or for the full academic year.  In general, you need to be in a similar program at your home school.  No portfolio is required.

Contacts for the program are: Architecture and Interior Architecture:  Helga Wood at 541-346-1433 or by e-mail at archadms@uoregon.edu.

Landscape Architecture Program

The Landscape Architecture program is open to NSE students for 2008-09, however studio courses are limited and are not guaranteed.

Please contact Stan Jones at 541-346-3619, sij@uoregon.edu, or Chad Bush at 541-346-3619, landarch@uoregon.edu, to discuss taking courses within this program.

Art Programs

The Department of Art has a policy of accommodating NSE students who are Art majors in their own school by granting major registration status at UO.  To be considered as an Art student, the student needs to do the following by April 1:

  • Send a letter from their department confirming an art major status
  • Send an unofficial transcript
  • Documents requested should be sent to:  Department of Art, 5232 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR  97403.

By May 15, the department also needs a list of the specific courses in Art the student would like to take in the Fall term.  The listing of Fall 2009 courses will be available online by the first week of May.  The list of courses is needed in order to authorize the student to register in the major restricted courses.  Students interested in art courses will have to provide the Art department with a course list each term they plan on being on exchange.

Contact Bonnie Lawrence at 541-346-3618 or at blawrenc@uoregon.edu for further information.

Business Administration/Accounting

Upper-division business and accounting classes at the University of Oregon are currently not open to NSE students on exchange.

Music and Dance programs

Music students must audition to ensure proper placement in major course work. Dance students interested in taking classes in the major will need to attend a placement class and contact the department regarding class dates.

Please contact the School of Music at 541-346-3761 and the Dance Department at 541-346-3386.

Education

Access to Education department's courses (Education Studies and Family and Human Services majors) is limited for many of their upper division courses. Contact Andrew Wahlstrom, NSE Coordinator, at 346-3211 (awahl@uoregon.edu) about planning for courses in the Education department.

Journalism and Communications, Psychology, Computer Science, Biology and other majors that have restricted access to upper division courses.

Students need to be aware that for many of our majors students must arrange with the departments in advance of registration in order to gain access to certain courses. Students can contact the department of interest to get course approval. Course approval has to be arranged each term in advance of registration to assure that students get entry to the courses they need. Students can contact the following for more information:

Tuition Information

  • Continuing Eligibility Requirements

Exchange students must be registered for a minimum of 12 credits before a tuition remission credit can be passed into an account.  Failure to complete 12 credits per term with at least a 2.5 GPA may result in the cancellation of your exchange.  Please contact Andrew Wahlstrom if you are experiencing academic difficulty prior to add/drop and withdrawl deadlines.

  • Tuition Remission

The UO Business Office will bill you after you register for classes.  The first billing you receive is a preliminary billing and it will NOT reflect the NSE tuition remission.  The first billing may list the full rate for full-time, non-resident tuition.  Don't panic, as you will only be charged the in-state tuition rate.

Your tuition remission will be placed into your account approximately 10 days prior to the first day of classes provided you have enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits.

For Plan A participants, your final bill will reflect the total for resident tuition and fees.

For Plan B participants, your final bill will be for any fees you have incurred.  You will not be charged for tuition.

It is recommended that you print and check your itemized billings each term to ensure that the billing is correct.  Itemized account information is available on DUCKWEB. Students must use a PAC number to access this information.
