Health Care Career: Dental Laboratory Technician Dental Laboratory Technicians generally have no interactions with patients directly. Instead, they interact with dentists to make dental prostheses. Dental prostheses are teeth replacements, which allow people who have missing teeth to eat, smile and talk just like they did before. Dental Technicians work with various types of material including wax, plastics, alloys, steel and porcelain. Dental Technicians can work in dental laboratories, dental schools, hospitals, and companies that work to produce prosthetic materials. Most lab technicians go through a 2 year training program to earn a certificate or associates degree. After completing a dental laboratory program, technicians are eligible to take the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (CDT). According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Lab Technicians earn an average of $42,640 a year (http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes519081.htm).
