In the thesis option, students are required to write a formal research proposal, which, among other traditional elements, includes a fully developed review of literature. Before proceeding with the thesis, students selecting this option are required to have a completed proposal approved by the program faculty and selected thesis committee members. If the proposal is approved, the student is required to take at least one additional research methodology class appropriate to the study (e. g. statistics, ethnographic methods, case study methods). In addition, a minimum of two additional terms is spent developing, implementing and reporting the research. This requires students to register for a minimum of 6 hours of either Thesis or Research credits, beyond the AAD Proposal Seminar.
The outcome of the thesis is an in-depth, documented investigation of a carefully developed research question. It is pursued with the supervision of a research director and consultation with a selected committee. The document between is typically 75-150 pages. The thesis is orally presented in a public forum. The document must conform to UO Graduate School standards, including master's committee approval and submission to the graduate school.
