A lilting welcome from flutist Karen Stingle of Eugene greeted visitors to the UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History during a special event showcasing traditional ways of celebrating the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, which occurs on December 22 in 2007. The museum, at 1680 East 15th Avenue, will maintain its regular hours of 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays through December 22. After closing for winter break, the museum will resume its regular schedule on January 2, 2008. Current exhibits feature Ice Age fossils from the museum’s collection and rock art-inspired paintings by Pacific Northwest painter Allen Cox, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oregon. Past and Presents, the museum store, offers nature-inspired gifts for all ages, many handcrafted by local artists.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is maintaining its regular schedule, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesdays and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, except major holidays. In addition to its extensive galleries featuring American, European, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese art, the museum, at 1430 Johnson Lane, is featuring the newest works by young Northwest artists. Works by local K-12 students will be on view in the Cheryl Ramberg Ford Lecture Hall through January 6, 2008. Precious Cargo, the museum store, carries a stylish array of books, gifts, art, toys, and home décor.
