Richard Lariviere,
President, University of Oregon
Thank you for considering the University of Oregon's wide array of academic options, each of which will shape your future in an exciting and unexpected way.
Over my career, I've had the privilege of teaching and studying in a wide variety of places in Asia, Europe, North and South America. This range of experience informs my view that the University of Oregon is a rare and special place featuring a unique combination of opportunities.
As Oregon's flagship university, we are one of only two institutions in the Northwest with membership in the prestigious sixty-two-member Association of American Universities. That means that we consistently rank among the best in the country when it comes to teaching and research. Our faculty members boast worldwide reputations, are dedicated to both working with students and to conducting innovative research.
We offer nearly three-hundred undergraduate majors, including eighteen languages and everything from marine biology to product design. UO students go beyond the classroom to take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities in the state - we have facilities in Portland and on the Oregon coast-and world-the university sponsors study abroad programs in eighty countries and internship opportunities in forty.
Closer to home, the UO Outdoor Program is one of the oldest and best in the country, empowering students to take and even lead outdoor adventures for every season, from snowboarding to kayaking. You can quickly escape the classroom to take in the nearby Cascade Mountains, the Willamette and McKenzie rivers, and the Pacific Ocean, which is just an hour's drive from Eugene's two-hundred-ninety-five-acre campus.
If you haven't already, I invite you to visit the University of Oregon. Walk the sidewalks, explore our buildings, sit under our trees, and talk with our faculty and students. This place will inspire you to grow, to learn, and to succeed. I look forward to seeing you here.
Sincerely,
Richard Lariviere
