May 14: Snapshots from a Journey
to Aromaticity
1,2-Dihydro-1,2-azaborines are
boron-nitrogen-containing heterocycles that are isostructural to the
ubiquitous and important benzene motif. The determination of the aromatic
character of these BN-heterocycles has received substantial interest.
The Liu group has taken
a structural approach to address this issue. Eric Abbey in the Liu lab
synthesized and structurally characterized the first examples of “pre-aromatic”
1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborines, enabling the direct comparison of localized
vs. delocalized systems. The crystallographic data provide an unprecedented
look into the structural changes that occur in six-membered BN-heterocycles
on their road to aromaticity, and they establish with little ambiguity
that 1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborines possess delocalized structures consistent
with aromaticity.
