EXPERIENCE

AS APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGIST:

To present: Consultant in Cultural and Applied Anthropology on conditions and affairs in Russia; Co-founder, Initiative Foundation, a US-Russian NGO dedicated to grass roots community development in Russian small towns and villages through electronic connectivity, small enterprise support, training and selected rotating credit. Instrumental in establishing an on-going community development project in Sergiev Posad, Russia.
February 1993-July 1998: Applied Anthropologist serving as Field Representative for the Moscow Bureau, International Organization for Migration. Direct field activities related to the massive resettlement problem in Russia to include assessments of migrant conditions throughout Russia; a Direct Assistance project to provide ‘start’ equipment to migrant small enterprises (125 founded); with a supportive microcredit project; encouragement and development of a network of regional NGOs to increase local contact; appropriate interaction with government agencies and leaders; and, monitoring, reporting and publishing of results.

AS CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGIST:

1988 to present. Research and teaching in traditional (17th and 18th cc) and contemporary Russian culture. Continuing association and projects at Academic Institutions in the US and Russia; field expeditions in Russian towns and villages; and participation on a variety of projects with Russian scholars, chiefly in the Ural Mountains, Siberia, and European Russia.
1971 to present. Academic research and continuing activities with Russian émigré groups in the United States (including Alaska) and Canada,

1978 to 1990. Lecturer on the History and Peoples of Russia and the former Soviet Union, Russian Culture and Values, and Soviet Life. Member of the Oregon Chautauqua Speakers' Program.

Currently co-ordinating and conducting a follow-up on two IREX projects with five Russian scholars of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Novosibirsk State University.
