Assignment

Worker will develop and update fire department by-laws, procedures, volunteer recruitment and computer technology as well as locate funding for these improvements. Participant will also work with County, Forest Service, BLM and local residents to develop a community plan for road improvement and dust control. Developing a solid waste recycling plan and implementing a Community Action Plan for weed control will also be important projects. In addition, worker will also encourage youth participation in civic activities by creating a “youth fund” to compensate teens.

Halfway is one of the most remote RARE communities as well as one of the smallest communities selected for worker placement. There are significant opportunities to help connect the community with the Snake River Scenic Area and improve economic conditions without negatively effecting the town or valley.

A native of a rural community, Sarah obtained a BA degree in Applied Research Sociology, Environmental Studies and Peace and Justice Studies from the University of St. Thomas in 1994. She has worked as an environmental educator and has developed her project management skills through volunteering for various community development, outdoor recreation and environmental projects.

Sarah is interested in the functions of rural communities and is eager to apply her skills in planning analysis, grant writing and GIS in order to help a community reach its goals.
