CAPN Business Meeting, Feb 19, Victoria BC
1. It was decided to return to the practice of mailing the bulletin,
discontinued in 2004. This will be produced more cheaply than in
previous incarnations to keep down costs, but still mailed out twice
yearly (in November to report on the previous conference, announce the
new one, and request dues for the following year, and in March, prior
to the conference, to give information about the conference and news
from member institutions). It was felt that the loss of the mailing had
had negative effects on membership and participation, and that the
website, while useful, was not a substitute.
2. The possibility of doing away with dues was discussed before a
definite decision was made on the bulletin. It was pointed out that
dues support the ACL as well as the scholarship fund. Dues will be set
at $10, and be payable before Dec 31 for the following year. Three
proposals were carried concerning CAPN funds.
First, Burma Williams moved that CAPN offer 2 prizes
of $100 each to the best abstracts from graduate students to help
defray the costs of attending CAPN; these prizes would be advertised in
the bulletin.
Second, Nigel Nicholson moved that CAPN establish an
award of $100 for long-standing and excellent school teachers from our
area. Nominations will be solicited in the Nov bulletin, and the prize
conferred at the meeting if the winner can attend.
Third, the scholarship committee proposed that 4
students from Boise St who aspire to be teachers be each awarded $200
to help them travel to Rome to study.
3. The secretary and the outgoing Treasurer (Mary Jaeger) have cleared
up the membership list; it now has about 45-50 names.
4. The idea of joint meetings with CACW was discussed. It was noted
that attendance this year was not high, but that this was probably a
result of the early deadlines for abstract submission. There was a
separate deadline for CAPN members, but this was not well publicized.
The executive committee decided to continue the practice, with a
meeting in 2007 at UBC, as long as we can be assured of a later
deadline for abstract submission.
5. The offices of CAPN were established: President, Laurel Bowman; Vice
President (= President the next year), Nigel Nicholson; Secretary (was
Bulletin editor), Malcolm Wilson; Treasurer, Nigel Nicholson; Executive
Committee: Nicholson, Wilson, Mary Jaeger, Ric and Burma Williams,
Lorina Quartarone, Alex Nice, James Wells and Catherine Connors;
Abstracts Committee for 2006 meeting: Nicholson, Quartarone and one
other from Reed; Scholarships Committee: Wilson, Quartarone and Ric
Williams.
6. CAAS has requested a representative from CAPN at its fall meeting to
discuss CAPN's history. CAPN decided to honor the request. The archives
are now in Nigel Nicholson's keeping, and he has a student assistant
who can go through it. Nicholson, Mary Jaeger and Lisa Quartarone will
decide which of them will represent CAPN at the CAAS meeting, or
whether someone else will.
7. A formal vote of thanks was passed to Laurel Bowman, Greg Rowe and
the University of Victoria for organizing and hosting the joint meeting.
