CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research focuses upon issues pertaining to equity and justice within the urban environment. Low-income communities and communities-of-color have been, and continue to be, discriminated against in many ways in today's urban, suburban, and rural contexts. Some of this discrimination is overt, yet the majority of it is largely unseen or unrecognized by those individuals or groups in positions of power or control. The underlaying premise for much of my work is that there exist large inequities with respect to the environmental health of our urbanized areas, and that these inequities can be tied directly to race, ethnicity, gender, ability, age, and income level.
My specific area of research focuses upon open space/public space within urban areas, and strives to address the question of how public/open space resources can and should be configured/considered in light of an inequitably served, multicultural society. What should the role of the design professional be? How can "mainstream" aesthetic preferences be broadened to include more than just European-American imagery? How can processes for the long-term management and control of public spaces be altered to increase the "meaningfulness" and sense of ownership that they elicit from their users? These are but a few of the questions that guide my current work.
