ApplicationAPPLICATION DEADLINEThe History Department accepts applications for Fall term admission only. Applications and application packet materials for Fall 2009 admission must be post marked by December 15, 2008. Everything must be postmarked on or before that date in order to be considered. Explorer version 4.51 or greater.] Application Fee. The application fee of $50.00 (U.S.) must accompany the application. When you are applying using the on-line application, only credit and debit cards are accepted. Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). All applicants are required to take the GRE. Only the general test is required, not the subject test (History). Neither the University of Oregon nor the Department of History sets a minimum requirement for GRE scores. The GRE code for Institution (University of Oregon) is 4846, Department (History) is 2701. For information about the GRE, write Education Testing Service, 1974 Center Street, Berkeley, CA 94704, or Box 955, Princeton, NJ 08540 or call 1-800-537-3160 or visit website http://www.gre.org. It takes five or six weeks for scores to reach the History Department, so be sure to take the exam in time for your scores to arrive before the application deadline. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) ---Non-Native English-speaking students only. All applicants who are non-native speakers of English are required to take the exam. The exam date should not be older than five years. The University of Oregon minimum TOEFL requirement is 575 for paper tests and 233 for computer tests. The History Department does not set an additional minimum requirement for TOEFL scores, though successful applicants typically exceed these minimum scores. Send TOEFL scores to the History Department. For information about the TOEFL exam visit their website http://www.toefl.org/ . Transcripts. Two official transcripts from all college-level classes taken need to be provided. One set of transcripts should be sent to the Department of History. The other transcript goes to the Office of Admission, 240 Oregon Hall, 1217 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-1217. Letters of Recommendation. Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation. The forms are available by request from the History Department or they may be downloaded from http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/forms/gs_620.pdf. You do not need to send three additional letters of recommendation in reference to your GTF application. The best recommendations usually come from people who are well acquainted with your academic qualifications and potential. If your last academic experience was a long time ago you may ask for recommendations from people you've worked with more recently, in or outside of academia, but keep in mind that we will be looking for specific comments on your research and writing skills. In most cases, recommenders send letters directly to us; you can check to see if we've received them through our on-line status site (https://casweb.uoregon.edu/applicationstatus/). Statement of Purpose. . The typed statement of purpose should be 1-2 pages in length, indicating your area of interest in history, career goals, and other relevant information Sample of Written Work. The typed or computer-printed sample of written work can be a seminar paper, term paper, extended book review, or a part of an M.A. thesis. It need not be lengthy, but it should reflect your ability to do research, analyze material, and write. Financial Statement-International students only. All international students applying for graduate admission at the University of Oregon are required to complete a Supplementary Application and Financial Statement for International Students. This form is available online (http://gradweb.uoregon.edu/online_app/application/FinancialStatement.pdf). Upon request by the UO Admissions Office the student may need to supply a bank statement, which is documented proof of what the student reports on the financial statement. Proof can be in the form of a letter from the student's/parents'/sponsor's bank, a letter awarding a scholarship or government loan, an affidavit of support (I-134). Upon verification of the student's financial ability to pay for the educational and living experiences, the UO will issue a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20), which is required in order for a student to apply for a visa. Fellowships (GTFs). The History Department has available some Graduate
Teaching Fellowships. If you want to be considered for a GTF, complete

APPLICATION STATUSApplicants can view the status of their application by accessing our online admission status website. Upon receipt of the Application for Graduate Admission at the History Department, the Graduate Coordinator will send you an acknowledgement letter, which includes an I.D. and password. The website is updated daily (Monday through Friday), and it allows you to check that we have received all your application materials. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSIn addition to the application materials required for all students, international students must complete three additional items: the TOEFL exam, the Supplementary Application and Financial Statement for International Students and provide a bank statement (if requested by the UO Admissions Office).
