ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
June 12, 2006
Metolius Room, EMU

ATTENDEES:   Ben Farrell, Paula Staight, Jim Blick, Karyn Kaplan, JR Gaddis, Anne Forrestel, Kay Coots

Chair for 2006-07

Ben called for nominations for the next chairperson. Paula Staight nominated Jim Blick and Karyn Kaplan seconded. The committee unanimously elected Jim and he accepted.

Review of the Year End Report

There were just a few suggested changes to the draft:

Karyn recommended that the Green Dorm Room project, ECAF, and CASL be separate and considered independently. She would like the EIC to provide a recommendation of support for CASL and also to discuss the issue with Frances Dyke. It is not possible for CASL to function as a sustainable living center without a demonstration house, and to hold seminars and classes without the proper tools and facilities.

Kay feels that the smoke free campus recommendation does reflect the committee’s discussion over the past year. However she cautions that some preliminary steps are still needed, such as updating the OAR and soliciting more input from students and other departments. A joint committee may need to be assembled.

Feedback and Follow up

The committee would like to determine if there is a process whereby the EIC can receive feedback from administration. Jim will contact Frances Dyke to invite her to a meeting during the summer to discuss and the best methods to receive response on usefulness and progress toward implementation of recommendations.

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, August 3 at 3pm in the EMU Board Room.
