Announcements:
· Land, Air Water hosts the 18th Annual Public Interest and Environmental Law Conference on March 2-5.
· Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability (H.O.P.E.S.) conference will be held on April 14-16.
· Some events scheduled during Earth Week are an outdoor fair Wednesday and Thursday, an afternoon teach-in and Earth Week Fest on Saturday. A Dirty Jobs Boycott will educate students about companies with poor environmental records and there will be a letter writing and postcard campaign for Clean Energy.
· Governor Kitzhaber has announced that the state will create a mandate for sustainability. He recently met with Dave Frohnmayer to find out what UO is doing.
· Department of the Navy asked Karyn to help judge the recycling and pollution prevention portion of their environmental awards. They have been able to demonstrate millions of dollars in cost savings through operating sustainability.
New Business
Environmental Citizen Award Karyn asked if the committee wants to solicit nominations for one faculty/staff and a student award this year. There has been difficulty in getting nominations in the past. It was suggested that we wait until next year and there were no objections.
Mortar Board Planner They have asked for quotes or event dates for the planner such as Earth Week, etc. If anyone would like to see something listed, give the information to Karyn.
Course Selection for the Fall Dan Udovic has proposed a full year environmental audit class. Other suggestions on courses may be directed to Karyn.
Surplus Property Waste created by used computers and new computer packaging is becoming very difficult to manage. The University eventually sends used computers to Salem, but State Surplus receives so many that they cannot take any more. A detailed report on this is being prepared for next meeting. Kay suggested that a subcommittee be formed to work on solutions such as promoting legislation to allow UO to donate usable equipment to schools or other government entities. Lanelle, Jim, Janet and David volunteered.
Green Computing Karyn will send out more information via E-mail. She mentioned that the green record for Hewlett Packard and Dell are good compared with that of Gateway.
Faculty Senate Inquiry There have been two informal queries from members of the Senate regarding any interest from Environmental Issues Committee to report to them instead of Dan Williams. Since the working relationship between Dan and the Committee has been very positive and productive, the consensus was that there is no need to change. Jim suggested that a Faculty Senate liaison be invited to join the Committee. His idea was applauded and will be given further consideration at the end of next term.
H.O.P.E.S. Conference Speaker The planners would like to book Kurt Teichert from Brown University. If he does attend, the Campus Planning Committee hopes to meet with him on Friday and then have a Saturday panel discussion on sustainability guidelines.
Subcommittees:
Logo The goal is to decide on a logo by the end of the year. Robyn will keep working with current samples. Lanelle and Bev were asked to contact anyone they felt might contribute additional ideas.
Transportation Jim, David and Karyn met with George Hecht and found that the Transportation Resource Center has been approved and funding is available. Dusty Miller consented to provide space in the EMU. They toured the rental office area on the ground floor as a possible site. Rand Stamm said that his department had not been involved to this point. Tom Hicks meets with George today and Tom Fitzpatrick will meet with him next week. The Committee offered it’s continued support.
The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting is Tuesday, April 25 at 11:00am in EMU Umpqua Room.
