General Business and Announcements:
· Janet Rose reported on surplus "junk" and Students Recycling Used Technology STRUT. She spoke with Suzanne Endow, Property Control Specialist in the Business Affairs Office. Computers and others items need to have Property Disposition Request (PDR) forms sent to Salem per ordinance 351.210. Other state agencies need to be informed and if no one else wants it then STRUT can have it. You can request that a computer to go to a particular school district in STRUT on the PDR. Robyn will post the property control web site on the EIC web site. Karyn suggested inviting Suzanne Endow to a meeting.
· David Niles has arranged to hold a sealed bid bike auction in the next couple of weeks. They will first be offered statewide and then locally. Bids will be submitted to Salem, but bikes can stay in Eugene.
· On Saturday, May 20, Bring Recycling will be doing a one-day electronics roundup for everything except televisions and microwaves.
· There will be a brown bag lunch for purchasing managers on May 10th.

New Business
Election of Chair for 2000-01
There were no volunteers to chair next year’s committee; therefore, it was decided to postpone the election. The committee asked Karyn to e-mail the EIC list find a volunteers.

Campus Planning Committee Presentation Christine Thompson distributed copies of the Sustainable Development Guidelines from the web page at (
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~uplan). These guidelines will eventually become part of the Long Range Campus Development Plan (LRCDP). Four categories are addressed in the guidelines: land use and transportation; landscape/siting; materials and structures; project management. Comments and suggestions are welcome at cthomps@oregon. This subcommitte will report to the Campus Planning Committee and in the summer a public hearing will be held. Ultimately, as part of the LRCDP, these guidelines can be used to hold construction projects accountable for using sustainable building practices.

Environmental Audit Class Presentation Teresa Sabol-Spezio taught ENVS 441 in the fall, 1999. She set it up like a business in that she was the project manager with a first year grad student as assistant project manager and did not use terms such as class, student, grade, etc. There were nine people taking ENVS 441 and they held meetings as senior environmental assessors in the "company" with time sheets, sick, vacation and personal days. They chose to look at the following areas: energy and water use, solid waste disposal and recycling, hazardous and solid waste management, pesticide and herbicide use on campus. This all greatly helped to promote ownership in the process.
Erb Memorial Union was chosen as the focus building and one of the areas they looked at was printing in the computer center. Theresa said that some changes have been made so that printers default to two-sided copies and que system is now used.
The group was extremely surprised to find that the University is already doing many positive things, such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This kind of good news should be more widely publicized to the campus community. They also recommend that individuals in areas such as Recycling, EH&S and IPM be strongly encouraged to document their knowledge so that it is not lost.
A final audit report was submitted to Dan Williams in February and is not yet finalized. Theresa has offered to teach the class for free next year if she can get two GTFs. One GTF should be a first year student who would then commit to the following year.
The committee members recommend that the environment audit class be funded again for the coming year. Karyn plans to work on having the year-end report ready in May and will include this recommendation.

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting is Tuesday, May 23 at 11:00am in EMU Umpqua Room.
