Adrianne Burns graduated from the University of Oregon in 1999 with a Bachelors degree in economics. Upon graduation,
Adrianne went to work at Microsoft Corporation, where she is currently employed as a Paralegal, working in
Product Development and Marketing. Adrianne explained that though her job description is not closely related to economics,
she utilizes many tools and skills learned through her studies, and that economics help her to see the bigger picture.
Her advice to students considering economics as their major is that, economics has a number of practical application in
the real world, and that economics is a good “stepping stone” on your way to a successful career. Adrianne explained
that good oral and written communication skills are necessary in order to be successful, and that English, Statistics,
and Computer Science courses would be beneficial to all future job seekers. She also stressed flexibility when considering
which career path to take. Not every job description must necessarily fit your formal education. You never know, you
might find something outside your immediate field of study that you like and enjoy.
