SCOPE of the Collection

The SWORP collection is contained in 49 acid free, archival boxes, which equals 32.25 linear feet. There are approximately 110,000 pages in the collection and the records date from the 1850s to 1950s. The collection covers a region containing southwestern Washington, western Oregon, and northern California which is the traditional homeland of about 44 federally recognized Tribes. Linguistic manuscripts alone contain information from more than 80 Native languages throughout the Americas, many of which are extinct or severely endangered. The scope of the language manuscripts in SWORP, including linguistic discussions, vocabulary lists, vocabulary comparisons, theory discussions, and publication manuscripts, may hold relevant information for every Tribe in North America. The combination of ethnohistoric and governmental documents is a unique, enabling multidisciplinary scholars to make use of the same collection in support of their historical and cultural research.
