meta-data: Update on Western Waters

To the Metadata Implementation Group and the Western
Waters Selection Team:

A lot of content that the Selection Team identified has
been added. So far, 21 documents are available in their
entirety, ranging from one page to 446 pages. A lot more
textual material is in the works. In addition to the text, we have
95 still images in the collection and our test aerial photo
and guide map.

To facilitate searching, Corey has completed the Browse by format
search option. Check it out on the collection's pages
at: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/catdept/digcol/wwdl/index.html
I encourage you to spend some time searching the documents,
clicking on the different displays within a compound
object and testing out the full-text searching features
within a selected document. If you have trouble figuring it
out, let me or Corey know. It would probably be helpful
for us to develop some searching tips for the collection
- perhaps as a link off the Browse by format page.

If anyone has ideas about that, send them on.

As I reported to you a few weeks ago, Tom Stave has
been busy identifying selections of text from the U.S.
Serials Set for inclusion in the collection. We have
worked on a couple of test volumes to investigate
some scanning issues and develop a routine. We've
worked out the scanning issues but now have to
make a couple of decisions about metadata. Also of
concern is the possible damage done to the bindings
of the original volumes because they are so tightly
bound. That content should start appearing in the
collection in the next couple of weeks.

Jaye has been busy checking more of the selected
titles to see if they have already been digitized, to
make sure they're in the public domain, and also
to see if they are held by UW, OSU, and WSU so
we can coordinate closely with them and make sure
we're not simultaneously digitizing the same content.

Barbara Jenkins is completing her transcription of
the Stephen Kahn interview from the Roll on Columbia
video. I have had another conversation with Media
Services and Andy Kirkpatrick is ready to digitize
the video clip corresponding to the transcription.
Our plan is to build a compound object with the video
clip and the pages of transcription. The video clip
will reside on another server but will be linked to
from within CONTENTdm.

Barbara Jenkins is completing work on the Columbia
River bibliography and filmography that will form
some of the contextual information for the collection.

The central GWLA site has harvested from our collection
for the second time. From what they tell me, we are
still the only site with a clearly identified local WWDL
collection with any contextual information. Supposedly,
the central site is about to undergo an overhaul (they've
hired someone to develop it and it has taken longer
than expected.)

I am preparing to send OCLC some TIFFs from our
collection for inclusion in an article that they are
doing to feature the project.

I've talked with Professor David Hulse who was featured
in the August 13 Inside Oregon
http://comm.uoregon.edu/inside/#3
about his Willamette River Basin project to see if
there was any way we could collaborate with him.
It turns out that his group is already collaborating
with the OSU Valley Library on a digital collection
related to their project. Professor Hulse gave me
a contact person's name at OSU and I will be
calling him to see what their plans are.

I would like to develop a collection development
policy statement for WWDL that would be part of the
project background information. I'll probably do a
draft and pass it on to the selection team for review.

If anyone else knows of pieces of the project
update that I've left out, please share it with
the list. (Perhaps Colin or Sara Cathy can update
us on the aerial photos work.)
