meta-data: Western Waters project news

1) I have updated the Web site for the Western Waters grant with
a number of things that are directly related to selection. That
web site is at: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/catdept/meta/westernwaters.html

- Of particular interest is a spreadsheet that Jaye Barlous (our digital
library intern) has been helping me develop to track what we have
put forward as possible content for the project. I have entered in various
suggestions that members of the selection team have given me
and added in what information you provided me with those
suggestions. Jaye is doing some research for me to identify
where we can find originals for digitizing, as well as investigating
copyright and existing digital versions. She is not done yet but
there is a lot of useful information available already.
I need you to review the spreadsheet and send me additions or
corrections to the information already there. In particular, the
maps, aerial photos and gov docs may have garbled information
because I was trying to copy in things from an email that Jon
sent to the Metadata Implementation Group on 15 Dec 2003
that is available at:
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/%7Ecatdept/meta-data/msg00034.html
I finally just gave up realizing that I didn't always understand what
specific items some of his comments referred to.

- I have also added in a section on the Web site with some Columbia River background information to give some basic context to the scope of
our piece of the project.

- Please take a look at the site and let me know of other sources or
background info you would like to have there.

2) Corey and I have set up the infrastructure for the Western Waters
database (using the model of putting all types of materials together
in one collection). In addition to us having some scans from the
Lorraine book to play with and add to that database, I'm also
hoping to have some photos selected this week so we can scan
them and actually apply some of the metadata and get a trial
collection up. It is imperative that I have some content available
for public viewing prior to a Deans' Council meeting in early
March.

3) There is a conference call set up for this Thursday for
selection team members with some counterparts at
WSU, UW, and OSU where we will be discussing
ways to collaborate on the content end of things.

4) I have a call set up for Friday with project leaders
at OSU where we will be discussing ways we can
collaborate beyond content selection. This is a preliminary
call to explore some basic issues.

That's it for now.
