Homework for Math 242, Business Calculus (Prof. Jon Brundan)

Week 1 (this homework is due in the discussion section of second week)

  • Review the techniques of differentiation from Math 241: power rule, derivatives of log and exp, product rule, quotient rule and chain rule.
  • Read sections 6.1 and 6.2
  • Solve the following problems:
  • Section 6.1: 2,4,6,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,36.

  • Week 2 (this homework is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday of third week)

  • Remember it is MLK day on Monday January 17. There is no class or discussion sections on that day, and the discussion sections on Wednesday have also been cancelled!
  • Read sections 6.3 and 6.4.
  • Section 6.1: 38,44,63,70,73.
  • Section 6.2: 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20.

  • Week 3 (this homework is due in the discussion section of fourth week)

  • We have now more or less finished chapter 6 -- next week we will start chapter 7. Note I am NOT going to cover section 7.1 (integration by parts) in this course -- its a nice thing but we can get away without covering it since we won't need it later on.
  • Read section 6.5 and review everything so far in chapter 6.
  • Section 6.2: 28,32,34,41,42,43,44,50,63,64.
  • Section 6.3: 9,10.
  • Section 6.5: 1,2,3.

  • Week 4 (this homework is due in the discussion section of fifth week)

  • There is a MIDTERM during the last hour of class next Monday. The midterm will be on everything in chapter 6, especially using anti-derivatives to compute definite integrals and areas, plus section 7.2 which we will cover in class on Wednesday this week. Make sure you remember the anti-derivatives of functions like x^n, 1 / x and e^x, and that you can do integration by substitution. If you want more practise, I'd recommend questions 1,2 and 3 of the review test at the end of chapter 6.
  • Section 6.5: 7,8,10,17,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,60,62,64,66 (hint: substitute u = x^2 - 1).

  • Week 5 (this homework is due in the discussion section of sixth week)

  • I will give the midterm back hopefully at the end of class on Wednesday. We've now more or less finished with integration. I'm going to spend a little time next on section 7.6 (differential equations).
  • Read section 7.6.
  • Section 6.5: 72,74.
  • Section 7.2: 10,12,18,20.
  • Section 7.6 (SORRY I PUT 7.5 BY MISTAKE FIRST TIME):
  • 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,22.

Week 6 (this homework is due in the discussion section of seventh week)

  • This week we will finish up differential equations with a few more applied examples, then go through sections 8.1 and 8.2, thinking about functions of several variables for the first time.
  • Read sections 8.1 and 8.2.
  • Section 7.6: 26,28,34.
  • Review questions at end of chapter 7: 2(a)(c), 5(a)(c). (Turn these questions in along with the rest of the homework.)
  • Section 8.1: 2,4,6,8,10,39,40.
  • Section 8.2: 2,4,6,8,10.

  • Week 7 (this homework is due in the discussion section of eighth week)

  • This week we'll cover sections 8.3 and 8.4, which is about optimization (finding minima and maxima) of functions of several variables.
  • On Wednesday next week it is our second midterm. This will mainly be on sections 7.6,8.1,8.2,8.3 and 8.4. But all of this involves differentiation and integration, so be prepared to differentiate something using the chain rule or product rule or to integrate something by substitution.
  • Read sections 8.3 and 8.4.
  • Section 8.2: 11,13,14,16,42.
  • Section 8.3: 2,4,6,8,10,12,42.
  • Section 8.4: 2,4,6,12,14.

  • Week 8 (this homework is due in the discussion section of ninth week)

  • Hooray! This is the last graded homework! We're pretty much done with the text book (all of chapter 8 up to and including page 512 of section 8.5). Next week (after the second midterm) I will be doing some things about linear systems taken from the course packet. Remember there is no reason you need to purchase this, unless you want an extra source to complement your notes from the lectures.
  • By the way I will set one more homework on Monday next week with a few practice problems about the linear systems stuff, and I will hand out solutions to it in class in dead week. Also on Wednesday next week I will give out a final review sheet in class to help you prepare for the final exam, and I will hand out solutions to this during our last class.
  • Read section 8.5 up to the end of page 512.
  • Section 8.3: 32,34,46.
  • Section 8.4: 20,24,37,38,40.
  • Section 8.5: 4,16,22,24,30.

  • Week 9 (this homework will not be collected in)

  • This is the last homework. I will assume you have done it -- there will be a question on the final exam on this material.
  • On Wednesday in class I will pass out a final review sheet to help you review for the final. The final exam will cover EVERYTHING we have done this term. I will give out solutions to the final review sheet on the last day of classes and answer any questions you have about it then...
  • It is a PDF file.... HW9.

  • REVIEW MATERIAL

Here is some stuff to help you review for the final exam. They are all PDF files.

  • Copy of midterm 1.
  • Copy of midterm 2.
  • Final review sheet and with solutions.
