APPLICATION
FOR THE GRADUATE PROGRAM
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
In applying to our graduate
programs,
please submit the following:
- Application and
official
transcripts
showing degrees: Fill out the on-line application and send one copy of
your official sealed transcripts to the University of Oregon Admissions
Office. Send one copy of the official transcript
from EACH school attended to
the University of Oregon Anthropology Department. (To submit the
on-line
application follow instructions below.)
- Three Letters of
Recommendation: At
least two of these should be from instructors under whom you have
studied
closely. Please find the link to the recommendation form at the
bottom of
this
page.
- GRE or TOEFL
scores:
Have your
scores forwarded to the Department of Anthropology directly from the
testing
services. All students,
including international students, are required to take the
GRE. Those whose undergraduate degree was earned at a school whose
instructional language was not English must also take theTest of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). International students who have
received a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S.
institution or from an institution in Australia, Canada (except
Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom are exempt from
the TOEFL or IELTS test requirement. Applicants are strongly advised
to take the GRE and/or TOEFL prior to
January
1, in order to ensure receipt of official test scores by the
application
deadline for the following academic year. The overall score on the
TOEFL must be 575 or
better on the written (paper) test, 233 or better on the computer-based
test, and 88 or better on the internet-based TOEFL. Also, beginning
with 2008-2009 admissions, the University will begin formally accepting
the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment
score as an alternative to the TOEFL. The established minimum IELTS
Overall Score for UO graduate admission will be 7.0, which is
comparable to the new TOEFL scores cited above. The IELTS has been
an accepted assessment for UO undergraduate admissions for several
years and is already being accepted, on a case-by-case basis, in
graduate admissions. You can learn more about the IELTS at <http://www.ielts.org/> www.ielts.org
If your test scores are not available by the deadline for the
academic year for which you are applying, your
application will not be considered. University of Oregon GRE Code is 4846. UO Department of
Anthropology GRE Code is 1702.
- Statement of Purpose:
Include a statement
of at least 1,000 and no more than 4,000 words describing your research
interests,
professional
goals, how these integrate with this department, and why you wish to be
admitted to the Department of Anthropology at the University of
Oregon.
Be sure to indicate the faculty member (or members) and the resources
and
aspects of the program that seem particularly suited to your
educational
needs (to access an MS Word file containing information on faculty
research interests, CLICK HERE).
This
statement will be read closely and should be prepared with care.
- Writing sample:
Submit a sample
of your writing. The sample should indicate your potential as a
graduate
student and budding anthropologist, so choose carefully. Term
papers,
papers given at professional meetings, and papers submitted for
publication
are likely choices.
